Strategies for Chemistry Class & Homework

There is no straightforward or absolute strategy in studying any subject. However, there are best practices you can employ to make the learning process effective and comfortable. The same applies to learning chemistry. Most chemistry students find it difficult to come up with workable strategies for their studies. Here are some strategies you can adopt or modernize to suit you.

Before lecture

Before attending a lecture, ensure that you’ve read through all assigned material. This gives you an idea of the topic to be treated and empowers you to contribute to the lesson. If you don’t have enough time at hand, at least go through the introduction and conclusion sections.

During lecture

  • Take notes as the lecture proceeds with much focus on the important points and what is written on the board. You can seek permission to have an audio recording of the lecture.
  • Ask questions if necessary.
  • The lecture hall is not a place for friendly conversations and other personal things. You should fully concentrate on what is being taught.

After lecture

  • Immediately after class makes time to expand the notes you took in class. Writing this in your own word reinforce knowledge and makes memorizing easier. If you missed certain points in class, you can ask friends for help to bridge the gap. You can also make use of the chemistry library in case you don’t understand a concept. If it is a practical question, make use of the laboratory. Your professor can also be of help if you still feel unsatisfied after utilizing the aforementioned.
  • If you were assigned any chapter or page readings for the next lecture, start reading as soon as possible. Do your homework right after the tasks were assigned by the teacher.
  • Most textbooks come with problem questions after each topic or chapter. Make use of these questions by trying your hands on them. It will help you to assess yourself.
  • Prepare a flashcard for new words, phrases, and terms you may come across as you study your chemistry books.
  • As you wrap up your homework for the day, do a quick recap of whatever you’ve learned.

Other useful tips

  • To ensure consistency in your chemistry studies, read your materials every day for at least one hour. Doing this reinforces knowledge in a space of time and helps to memorize easier. It is a better option to piling your notes up to study for long hours on weekends.
  • It is best to study early and do homework carefully than wait until exams are near. As soon as you receive your studying materials, start learning. Doing this prevents examination stress and anxiety during exams.
  • It is good to take notes during lectures, but don’t write word-to-word whatever your tutor says. Your notes taking should only be the important points.
  • Always try to understand the main concept behind every topic you learn. Understanding the concept makes it easier to explain it using your own words. It also makes it easier to remember.
  • Rest! Having a good rest is keen for your mental health. After doing chemistry assignments for long hours, take time off the books to rest. Aside from relieving you of stress, it rejuvenates the brain for the next task.
